Dancesport Under Seiged (Really Final Part)

This is George Tan he is the president of the Malaysian Professional Dancesport Council (MPDC). He is also the only qualified Chairman of adjudicator in Malaysia. Let me tell you something about him, don't mess with him as far as Dancesport is concerned. At the Lake Club ranking competition, of the 12 semi finalist I think almost 70 per cent of the Dancesport Athletes should be disqualified.

Now you chaps think that I am joking or smirking over my statement. I think all you Grade A athletes who breached the rules have the Sports Director to thank. You do not know what is happening behind the scene and you know how difficult it is to plead to George Tan when the IDSF law is on his side.

Most of you know about the dress regulations stuff like making sure the 2 bra cups are not more than 5 cm and the under garment cannot be skin colour. How many of you know that if you want to change your costumes in a competition you need to inform and seek the permission of the Chairman of adjudicator? How many of you had sought his permission, according to George Tan, none of you MPDC/IDSF members Grade A did that. No respect for him as Chairman of Adjudicators for the event.

George Tan lectured me that the IDSF regulation was passed many years ago at the 2006 IDSF AGM. At the last IDSF Chairperson Congress in Stuttgart this flouting of the dress regulation has reached such a critical point that Heinz Spaeker the IDSF Sports Director made it clear on the following.

There will no longer be a first warning to change of costume that are in breach of the rules. The chairperson of the competition are NOT obliged to give any warnings. The Chairperson can disqualify a couple immediately in case of a breach of the IDSF Dress Regulations.

If you wish to change your costume, it is now obligatory that couples seek the permission of the Chairperson and that the Chairpersons accepts that the new costumes conform with the dress regulations. It is no fun being lectured by a man who sport an army style hair cut like George Tan, look at his face, you don't mess with a person like him. I had to plead with him and he told me that this is an IDSF run competition , he is not answerable to anyone except his conscience. His conscience is clear. Finally after much pleading he decided to tell me off, that as Sports Director I should know or ought to have known the rules. George Tan referred me to Dancesport Today 3/2007 at page 3.

He warned that he will let me go this time and will take my plea as a requests by all you dancers for permission to change of costumes. Phew! what a relief. Now why is he so strict? George explained that Dancesport is now admitted in the Olympic Family Games but not in the Olympic Games yet. If you athletes keep flouting the rules who suffers, the whole Dancesport community in IDSF suffers.

Now you see why you dancers have to buy me dinner and thank me. Now it is my turn to warn all of you, Dancesport is a Sport. So don't play play okay? You are in MPDC and we follow only IDSF rules, you want to go for the Games respect the rules of IDSF. There is no compromise on this.

is George tan the most qualified adjusciator? Well i read this with some interest. Ok he's the chairman- but what is the scope of his duty.

Recently I have had an oppurtunity to look at the results of the gardeA & C events published at the MPDC website. In the grade A events competitor 12 (Teo) was given 6s and 5s by Ms Ivy Por certified IDSF judge. The rest of the judges game 2-3's whats hapepning in the judging. Ok in judging there is that micro second when you maybe out time and not in form but I think we all know the real reason.
In grade c there was also a competitor that gave 1s for all three dances while the rest of the judges game 5s and 6s ok at least he had the good sence to not effect the ranking, Am latin , pre Am latin ahh... kinda the same yeah.

Ok back to the dutied of the chairman, chief adjudicator what ever you want to call him, when is he measure the distances of the dancers bar cups and not brave enough to speak up abt the judging. Did he make a comment to you that so and so had been judging in a certain way for many years now and maybe such actions should be taken, so I dont think he's the greatest adjudictor in the world no i dont think he knows the rules best - if he makes a speech or send a warning letter or disqualifies rediculous juding yes he's abt the best Chief adjudictor there is. I remember a sporting event in Europe when the Prince of some country was the guest the honour - the judges took turns to put up the results on little score cards and they were reading 1 2 1 2 1 1 and a 6 the Prince got so embrassed he got up near the end and walk out , all the competitior and guest knew cause we all had to stand up, why are we even complaining abt bra cups when we haven't address the most basic requirements.

Thank you for your comments Francis , a most thought provoking but misplaced. When you ask is George Tan the most qualified adjudicator, it all depends on whose eyes you are looking from. If he were to mark the couple you favor couple high you will in all probability say that he is a qualified adjudicator. In Malaysia he is the only qualified Chairman of adjudicator, whether he is qualified or not in your eyes is not relevant, IDSF thinks that he is capable of holding that position.

So Ivy Por gave Teo 6 and 5 and the rest 2 and 3 and what is wrong with that. Is your argument based on the fact that Ivy Por is prejudice or incompetent? If you are saying that you had better proved that she is incompetent? You see Francis, we are talking about a subjective sport and in subjective sport you cannot really by looking at the marks comment the manner in which an adjudicator marks.

No I do not call George Tan the Chairman of adjudicator , it is a title created by IDSF for such people. Their training is different from that of normal IDSF adjudicators. Again the measurement of bra cups are in the IDSF dress regulations, not created by George Tan, he is under a duty to enforce the rules. This competition that we call Dancesport is a termed coined by IDSF.
Since you are keen follower of dance sport competition. Have you been following Blackpool before Brian Watson and Carmen retired as Champion?

There were mummers that he was so unfit that he does not deserve the Champion for there are other couples better than him.

Are you suggesting that the whole lot of Blackpool adjudicators are all incompetent and blind?

There are many factors why an adjudicator marks the way they did and there is no right or wrong answer to it. Natasha Ambroz, once told me that at the IDSF adjudicator Congress they can tell the adjudicators how to read lines, musicality and so on. What however IDSF cannot tell them is to change the inherent prejudice, the outlook of an adjudicator. For example Natsha did mention that the European judges normally do not like the Chinese Dancing style. They may be technically perfect. but their dancing lack a soul. Now Francis tell me what do you understand by that?

Honestly I do not know what she means.

All said I still thank you for giving me your perspective of Dancesport and you most certainly are entitled to disagree with my views. In this case, I would stronly recommend that you read the IDSF magazine when judging criteria are being discussed.
