Discipline in the National Ranking

Have you checked the points of our National athletes after the first round of competition at Batu Pahat? If you have not, go to the MPDC web site at http://www.mpdc.org.my/main/. You would notice that there are no points awarded to Wilson and Michelle but their names are in the Malaysian ranking list. They came out second and rightly so they deserve to be acknowledged.

The reason for the blank is Wilson has written to me by way of email dated the 30th of August 2008, that he cannot commit to Team Dancesport Malaysia 2009 due to his studies and that his partner Michelle plans to go overseas in 2009. The date when the major Games will be held.

The council having deliberated this situation has decided that since he has voluntarily opted out of the selection, there are no further reason to award him any points from the Championship. Let me explain that the points are given to Malaysian dance athlete as a gauge for MDSB and MPDC to select those with the most points to be admitted for further training under the Team Dancesport Malaysia 2009. In the event you have declared your intention to decline being selected, the points served no purpose to you.

We would like to thank Wilson for being forthright and honest to MPDC and to me of his intentions that he cannot commit himself for the Games but nevertheless I personally wish him well and after he has completed his studies, maybe he would like to try other Championship selections by MPDC.

The other matter that is taken into account and really this is academic as in Wilson's case is that he has taken a neutral stand in Dancesport and he has made his intentions very clearly in his email to me. In short by taking a neutral stand what we understand is that he would like to dance in any competition that comes in his way. Again I personally respect that stand , and in my blog below, I did mention that it is a matter of choice for the dancers to choose which body they want to dance in.

Since he has made the choice by dancing in an unsanctioned competition, it is quite clear that he does not intend to be bound by the rules of MPDC/IDSF/MDSB/ADSF. As sports director I have this to say. In the National Ranking we are dealing with selecting the best athlete for Dancesport in Malaysia. In the Asian ranking we will see how our athletes fare in Asia compared to other athletes from the region. In the international ranking we have the international IDSF ranking for our athletes.

Please understand that we do not measure ourselves with other bodies that have their own standard in ranking their dancers, as I have pointed in my blog below. By that what I am harbouring is you cannot compare an apple run competition with an orange run competition. Simply because the apple run competition and the orange run competition runs on different rules and protocol. The rules are important to give order in a competition. We cannot have a free for all.

To all Grade A athletes in MDSB/MPDC you have made your choice to participate the National ranking. As a dancesport athlete you know your obligation and duties, that I do not have to spell out here. We expect a certain standard of self respect and discipline from you. In all organisation they have their rules and regulations and if you choose not to follow the rules and regulations, you do so at your own peril.

As for Wilson, he is a talented dancer and I am sure he will do fine in other competition and I wish him well.

Are we hard ? You decide, but rules are meant to be followed and I invite healthy discussion on this.

The picture is the prickly cactus, some may think it is a prickly issue, I do not think so.

Dear sir,

This question keep running in my head, could some really good dancer (with chance to win medal for our country) was not selected to represent the country because they belong to another associate? I fully understand in your last article & comment between apple and orange. But from outsider point of view, the result is 2 seperate group of dancer is competing among themselves/their own group. I always believe that competition lead to greater achievement.

And just out of my curiosity, is there any dance from another associate ever, that is really good but you have to let them out of team dancesport?

Best regards

What are the rules actually. Grade Grade C and Senior can compete in other competition or not??, how about grade B??

If you dont want any points can enter Grade A again or not just for experience??? Or can not enter at all ??? Must be clear a bit so blur blur who can understand. Sorry for asking so specifically but I think it should be spelt out. After all theres no right or wrong, rules are rules.

I believe last time also got Grade A enter other competition but maybe they got no points or not finalist. So does the rule apply to everyone or just the finalist or the contenders. Sorry cause when I read the artcle I cannot understand so better ask for clear explanation.

I think this a bit tought to answer but has to be done the rules have to be spelt our it if expect people to follow them. Lolz.

Thank you so very much for your questions to both the comments from outspoken and hiri. In Malaysia only grade A dancers are caught.

In Singapore all the grades are caught, in that they cannot dance in unsanctioned competition. If you are B,C,D or E you can dance anywhere until such time there are directives to this effect.
Yes there are many good professionals that stands a good chance to win medals for the country, and they can join in, BUT they must follow the IDSF rules.

You must look at it from the point of sports.

Hiri, you know there are 2 bodies in Malaysia governing Dancesport. Do you recall me writing about the the Asia Amateur Closed , that is the highest event. Can you compare that event and that ranking with IDSF Grade A? If cannot why cannot, as you have said because one is apple one is orange.

On outspoken, even senior can dance in any competition and we do not bother them. Let the seniors enjoy themselves while they still can dance. We are only talking about Grade A.

If you do not want points, why bother to join the National ranking. You just want, like the Hokkien say "kaki song". Wah! I can beat Malaysian No. 1 but I got no time for the SEA Games. These sort of dancers dance to feed their ego. The National selection is one serious program, we don't need such dancers.

If this chap is Benedetto Ferrugio or Brian Watson, maybe we can slowly slowly talk because surely can win medal for Malaysia mah. If this dancer is from Tanjong Malim, Sekinchang or Kuala Kubu Baru win first place in Malaysia ranking, MPDC will encourage to join TDM. Don't want points then go else where and "kaki song" la.

Other than that why waste MPDC time , there are so many "kaki song" competition in Malaysia, join them and "song ka si"

Yes I agree MPDC must make it clear and I will bring this up with the MPDC council.

As far as I recall, there is hardly any incident of a highly rated dancer hindered from having the chance to win medals for the country going by HIRI`s curiosity.
In any event, HIRI, getting to compete in national ranking as I see it, is just like getting married to a possessive person. Once married, you must forget your other girlfriends (uhh, or boyfriends). The key word is commitment and there is a convention to follow. Try fooling around and trouble is bound to happen whether you are the most handsome guy or beautiful girl around.

I agree with OUTSPOKEN that rules should be spelt out. Unfortunately the reality is, to stretch it further, we can never know or understand all the rules in the country for that matter. Going through the MPDC website where the rules of national selection is available, I would say it may take a bit of time to understand the dos and donts.

Perhaps, the paramount rule when it comes to sports is to know the difference between the de facto mainstream national controlling bodies for the respective sports as opposed to other organizations that may also promote similar sports and activities. Sometimes such an organization may be an associate of the national controlling body. But if such organization happen to a rival or conflicting body to the national body, caveat emptor.

Any national body for that matter is also responsible to their respective international body that would expect the national body to abide by certain rules. Uuuggg, more rules...
